When someone we love goes through something we just cannot fix, the sentiment always seems to be “I just wish there were something I could do.” A few years ago, I watched helplessly as my dear friend Heidi Gusenius endured a fight against AML, a type of Leukemia. In fact, this was her second experience with AML. I am thrilled to share that Heidi won both battles against cancer and continues to be in remission today.
Heidi is an amazing friend, mother, and human; in fact, she is the type that makes you a better person just by being around her. Over many years, she has worked tirelessly to raise funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) to find cures for blood cancers and to help patients and their families as they battle the disease. As a result, Heidi received a (much deserved!) nomination for Woman of the Year, LLS’s annual fundraising campaign.
Since Jan. 2017, LLS helped advance 45 of the 51 blood cancer treatment options approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. To give you a sense of how extraordinary this is, in the past, a good year for FDA approvals would have included two to three new treatment options. Moreover, LLS-funded treatments are now being used to treat not only blood cancers, but also bone, brain, prostate, ovarian and breast cancers, melanoma, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and many other diseases. This is an organization that is making an impact with the dollars it raises!
This is something we CAN do to make a difference for patients like Heidi.
Modus Advisors is honored to support Heidi and her candidacy for LLS’s Woman of the Year. We donated to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to help Heidi reach her goal of raising $150,000 for LLS. These funds will go directly to LLS’s mission of finding a cure for blood cancers.
